Round The Island - Tides & Tactics

The Solent doesn't forgive the unprepared.

1,000 yachts. One island. And more tidal complexity than most sailors encounter in an entire season. The Round the Island Race is one of the most iconic events in the UK sailing calendar - and for good reason. It is spectacular, competitive, and deeply unforgiving if you don't know what's coming. For crews sailing from Brighton, the Solent is unfamiliar water. The tidal streams are powerful and unforgiving. Local knowledge can be the difference between a race to remember and one you'd rather forget.

What you'll learn

A practical, experience-led briefing - not a textbook rundown. Expect honest insight, hard-won tips, and plenty of time for questions.

  • The key tidal streams around the Isle of Wight and how to use them to your advantage
  • Critical waypoints, headlands and decision points on the course
  • Weather patterns to watch in the build-up and on race day
  • Starting strategy and managing a fleet of nearly 1,000 boats
  • The passages that catch crews out - and exactly how to avoid them
  • What separates a good result from a great one

Your guide for the evening

The briefing is led by BMYC member Neil Angel, skipper of Flawless J - a J/105 based in the Hamble and a regular on the south coast racing circuit. Neil knows the Solent, the tides around the Isle of Wight, and this race intimately. It's a great chance to get genuinely useful, experience-led knowledge before you hit the start line.
