Learning & Development '26 » Run the Race
Great racing doesn't happen by accident. Behind every start line is a small team making decisions about wind, tide, course layout and safety - often in real time, and often under pressure.
The evening will give members a practical introduction to race management at BMYC. This won't be a sit-and-listen talk. You'll be working through real race-day scenarios and making the calls a race officer has to make.
Using a forecast as your starting point, you'll step into the race officer's role and work through how a race is designed, started and managed.
What to expect
The evening will focus on the practical elements of race management, including:
- Understanding different course formats and when they work best
- Designing a race course using a forecast to decide the most appropriate course for the conditions
- The race start sequence flags, timing and how the start line is controlled
- Race-day risk assessment identifying hazards and completing a practical risk assessment based on forecast or actual conditions
Whether you're interested in helping run races, want to understand the process better, or simply fancy seeing what goes on behind the scenes, this session will give you a clear and practical introduction.
Participants will have the opportunity to join the race team on the water during a Sunday race to see how it all works in practice and get hands-on experience.
