What is Club Class..?
Club Class is our way of introducing people to our key sailing activity of yacht racing via a series of five practical participation sessions. Whether you are completely new to sailing and looking to pick up the basics, or an experienced sailor who would like to build on previous experience and add racing to your repertoire, Club Class has something to offer. You will meet and sail with owners and crews who are actively looking for new crew members.
We normally run Club Class in Spring and Autumn. Unfortunately, this Spring took us straight into Lockdown after week 1. We were hoping that our Autumn Club Class would run in September, but we have decided to postpone until the Spring of 2021. Details and dates will be published in the New Year.
Club Class commences on a Saturday at 08:30 hrs and continues for five Saturday mornings (weather permitting). The cost of the Club Class experience (including a year’s full single membership) is currently £190 + £25 joining fee * (Concessions: £99 +£25 joining fee). Club Class is only available to over-18s.
Club Class is not a training course, you will learn practical skills at your own pace by participating alongside racing crew spending as much time as possible on the water; sessions afloat will be supported by shore-based briefings focussing on crew co-ordination, basic sailing manoeuvres, mark-rounding techniques, starting techniques, the handicap system, basic racing rules, essential rope work, sources of and interpretation of meteorological and tidal information, tactics and course planning. We’ll also point you in the right direction if you want to gain formal sailing qualifications.
By the end of Club Class, participants will have experienced the basics of tacking/gybing, sail trim, spinnakers, safety aboard, setting-up and packing away.
Members completing Club Class are encouraged to make the most of their membership by becoming a crew member aboard one of the yachts racing regularly out of Brighton Marina.
Am I fit enough..?
Sailing is a fun and sociable sport that can be enjoyed by anyone whatever level of fitness and mobility. Having said that, yacht racing and in particular the yachts we will be using do require a reasonable level of fitness and mobility. If you would like advice on fitness level required for Club Class, please get in touch.
What do I need to bring..?
All safety equipment will be provided. For the sessions afloat it is essential that you come prepared to be outside for a couple of hours under conditions whereby you may get wet:
|–||Soft-soled shoes or boots that will give you adequate grip whilst not marking the decks are essential;|
|–||Lots of thin layers are better than a few thick layers to help regulate body warmth/comfort;|
|–||Waterproofs are essential – Golfing or Walking types will be sufficient as we won’t be venturing afloat in adverse conditions;|
|–||A pair of leather palmed gloves will help protect your hands.|
It may be worth bringing a change of clothing (left in your car or the club house); changing facilities available.
Apart from that all you need bring is bags of enthusiasm, a will to experience something new and a smile…
The social side
The Club restaurant offers a good meals and snacks menu whilst our bar offers a fine selection of beers, spirits, wines and soft drinks to consume while you relax, enjoy the opportunity to meet some of our regular members and to share experiences with fellow Club Classers.
Of course, as a member you are welcome to use the bar, restaurant and sunny balcony at any time and you have a discount of 20% on food and drink. Check out opening times.
Are you a boat owner?
CLUB CLASS ALSO WELCOMES EXISTING BOAT OWNERS WHO WANT TO TRY RACING
Many of the skippers regularly racing their boats at BMYC started by bringing their boat along to Club Class. Many of the boats are standard design cruisers. You don’t need a sophisticated racing boat.
At Club Class we’ll ‘tailor-make’ the instruction you receive to suit you and your level of experience and then, when we go out to practise we will put on board your boat an experienced skipper and crew to help and advise you.
To find out more email email@example.com and we’ll come back to you to talk it through.
You will be enrolled as a member of BMYC and a place will be reserved for you (subject to availability). Find out more about membership.
For more information about Club Class, or if you have any queries, please contact us by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone on 07437 769033.
You can pay by bank transfer or by debit card on your first morning, or if you prefer we can send you an invoice with a link to an online payment system (Stripe).
